THE WIZARD OF OZ Youth Edition features the same iconic story and songs that made the 1939 MGM film what it is today - but in a shortened version for our elementary and middle schoolers! The musical features Dorothy Gale, a young girl who falls into a dream world during a Kansas cyclone. She meets Glinda, the Good Witch, and the Wicked Witch of the West, and as she journeys to the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City, she meets the beloved characters of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. The story is complete with many Munchkins, Crows, Trees, Jitterbugs, and more! Don't miss out on your chance to be a part of this iconic musical, reimagined in an outdoor production! THE WIZARD OF OZ Youth Edition has a flexible cast size with many featured and ensemble roles. There is a spot for everyone!
All of our programs are COVID-compliant with all current NJ federal mandates. All rehearsals, performances, and other production needs will be held safely outdoors in our special outdoor studio, complete with hardwood dance flooring. All choreography and blocking of the show will adhere to current NJ COVID guidelines. If you have any concerns about our safety protocols, do not hesitate to contact us via email at [email protected].
Rehearsals will begin in mid September at the above times. As always, conflicts are accepted if noted on the audition form!
Audition Information
Auditions for this production will be held via video submission and will be due Wednesday, September 8th by 11:59pm. Students must choose their own song in the style of the show they will be auditioning for. Please do not sing from the show - instead find a song that alludes to the character you want to audition for. You will need to provide your own backing track for your video audition. Audition cuts should be one minute in length.
Below is a list which might help guide you in your decision to choose a song. This is just a guide - feel free to choose something not on this list. If you need any help, don't hesitate to reach out! [email protected]
Show Albums to consider:
Any Disney Musicals (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Frozen, Mary Poppins, among others)
Any Rodgers and Hammerstein Musicals (Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, The King and I, among others)
Annie
Matilda
Seussical
Shrek the Musical
Once you've chosen your audition cut, you will need to tape yourself singing the song. We will be evaluating your auditions based not only on singing and acting (performance ability) but also the success of your self-tape.
Is the frame catching from your chest to your head?
Are you against a blank wall?
Can we hear your voice clearly over the music?
Do you look neat and presentable?
Do you introduce yourself and the song you are singing?
We want to help prepare you for this new world of virtual theatre. Research self-tape examples online or through friends. If you have questions on how to make your audition song and/or self-tape successful, don't hesitate to reach out to us ([email protected]).
After you find a self-tape you're happy with, you should upload it to YouTube for submission. It must be uploaded as UNLISTED or PUBLIC - if it is private, we will not be able to see it! You can upload from your phone or a computer. Please title your video STUDENT NAME - WIZARD OF OZ - SONG NAME (i.e. KATHRYN MCMANUS - WIZARD OF OZ - PART OF YOUR WORLD).
If needed, callbacks will be held Saturday, September 12th, between 9am-12pm.
